Cute & Easy Woven Basket Craft for Kids Made By Kids!

Cute and easy woven basket craft for kids, made by kids! MyKidsGuide.com

This cute woven basket craft for kids takes very few supplies, which makes it easy to create on a whim.  Assembly does take a little more time than most crafts, so make sure you carve out at least 30 minutes of your day to spend on it.

The weaving can prove to be a bit difficult for younger children, so this craft is better suited towards older kids.  Younger children may also have a more difficult time using the stapler.  I recommend it for ages 6 and up.

  • Construction Paper
  • Stapler
  • Scissors
  • Stickers and other embellishments, if desired

Directions for this woven basket craft for kids:

  • Fold a piece of construction paper in half lengthwise.
  • Hold the folded side of the paper towards you.  Place your scissors 1” from the edge of the paper and make a long cut. Stop 1.5” from the edge of the paper so that no separation occurs.
  • Repeat the cuts until you reach the end of the paper.  When you unfold it, you should have long strips that are attached on all four sides of the paper.
  • Cut 1” x 8.5”  strips from other colors of construction paper.  These can all be the same color or assorted colors.
  • Lay the paper that was cut in step 2 flat on a table with the cuts in a horizontal position.  Weave the 1” strips through the paper.  Alternate each strip to make a tight weave.  This is done by starting one piece on top of the paper, the next piece below, and so on.

When you are finished with each strip, push it tightly against the one next to it.  This will keep the basket sturdy. Once you are finished weaving, use the stapler to staple each end to the large piece of paper.  This will prevent slipping. Folding into the basket shape is the trickiest part of the entire craft.  Adult assistance is recommended. Here’s how to do it:

  • Leave the woven sheet flat on the table and fold the short sides in approximately 3”.
  • Pull up on the long sides to form a rough basket shape.
  • There will be short corners where the sides overlap.  Tuck these under and fold tightly.    Staple one side to secure.  Work your way around the basket, neatly tucking in each corner and stapling.  You may need to slightly cut these to make them lie flat.
  • Cut a 3”x11” strip from construction paper.  Staple the ends to the basket to create a handle.

While folding the basket gets a bit tricky, this really is a cute and easy woven basket craft for kids. When they’re done, they’ll have a neat little place to keep treasures! Better yet, let kids pick some flowers from the garden and display them in their basket.

  1. This is so cute! I remember making something like this when I was a kid. My daughter will love making one of these. Thanks!

  2. Such a great little idea to keep the kids busy. I had to do basket weaving in school, and let me tell you it was time consuming.
