It’s a regular occurrence for my three year old to be scurrying around the house gathering random objects and hoarding them in a bag or anything else she can find. Recently, her favorite has been loose change. She loves finding “coins” and always needs a special place to store them and it’s always pretty amusing to see what she’ll come up with. Sometimes it’s something pretty simple like a bag or box, other times it’s a random sock or hat. What she really needed was a piggy bank. Wikk Stix are pieces of hand knitting yarn that have been coated with a food-grade wax.

They are nontoxic and do not contain any latex, gluten, or other nut oils that could be potentially irritating. Wikki Stix are pliable and can be bent into any form. They cannot be broken or torn apart, but can be easily cut with scissors.   Simply use a small amount of finger pressure and Wikki Stix will stick to just about any smooth surface.

The Wikki Stix Designer Piggy Bank includes a porcelain piggy bank that is about 9 inches long, and about 8.75 inches wide. It also comes with 75 Wikki Stix in varying colors in order to decorate the piggy bank in any way your little one can imagine. There is a sturdy rubber stopper on the bottom of the bank as well as foam pads under the piggy’s feet to prevent scratching surfaces.

My daughter loves to draw and paint, so the Wikki Stix were really exciting for her. She loved all the different colored sticks that were included, and how she could mold them and they would maintain their shape. After repeatedly bending and pulling the sticks I noticed our hands were just a little waxy, but otherwise the colors didn’t rub off onto our fingers or other surfaces all. A day or so later I found a couple pieces of Wikki Stix had mysteriously made their way into our carpeted living room and was pleasantly surprised to find that they didn’t become matted into the carpeting. I know this is something parents everywhere can appreciate!

The Wikki Stix provided with the kit were more than enough. In fact, there were several left over when it was time to clean up. If my daughter wants to go back and remove any of the Wikki Stix on her piggy she can, and they can be removed with no problem. I’ll save the extras for her to give it a little makeover should she ever want to do so.

In addition to the artistic feature, the Wikki Stix proved to be an educational tool as well. I’ve been teaching my daughter to recognize the letters in her name and the Wikki Stix were perfect for this. I molded each letter and she applied them in their order along the side of the piggy repeating the name of each one. This activity also gave my daughter and I the chance to work together, but I also liked how she could be very independent and work alone on the piggy bank design as well. Last but not least, the Wikki Stix Designer Piggy Bank provided a fun starting point for talking to my daughter about the value of money and the basics of how it works.
