We are down to the wire in the The Voice season 9 Top 9 episode! So, last night the final nine contestants performed. Tonight, there will be five contestants eliminated. Tonight’s semifinals will look a bit different when compared to past seasons. In the past, either 2 or 3 contestants were eliminated each week until the finale, which consisted of 3 or 4 contestants. In this season 9 of The Voice, just one person was eliminated each week. So, now we have nine contestants left and only four spots available in the finale. Meaning the semifinals will need to eliminate five candidates. So how is that going to work? The three singers with the most votes will automatically be in the finale. The three singers with the least votes will automatically be eliminated. So, that will leave the middle 3 singers, who will sing one song each to compete for the 4th spot in the finale. Folks on Twitter will choose the winner. So, let’s get down to the performances from The Voice last night.

The Voice Season 9 Performances

Barrett- Team Blake- Ghost by Ella Henderson-

This was a rather strange performance from Barrett. In the beginning of the song, it feels like you are in church and then suddenly you feel like you are live at a Credence Clearwater Revival concert. I don’t like it at all, it is nothing but a huge mess. I am afraid Barrett may be one of the five eliminated tonight.

Shelby- Team Adam- Even God Must Get the Blues by Jo Dee Messina-

This is a good song choice for Shelby. It is an older song that dates back to the late 90’s, but it still deals with tough times. Shelby does a fantastic job with the vocals here. I think this performance should send her to the finale next week.

Jeffrey- Team Gwen- Believe by Cher-

While this is a pretty powerful song, I think it is a great song choice for Jeffrey. He sings a slower version of the song, which comes out beautifully. He totally nails this performance with no misstep or mistake. He has my vote tonight. There is no way that he shouldn’t be in the finale.

Braiden- Team Gwen- Amazing Grace-

And here is another powerful song, probably one of the most powerful songs of all time. Braiden is very comfortable with this song choice. But, on an emotional level, Braiden seems like he is falling apart at the seams. He gives a great performance on the song but all in all, the kid is just 15 years old. His voice is still changing and has done so even throughout this competition. He just doesn’t have what it takes to “really” sing this song.

Zach- Team Blake- The Climb by Miley Cyrus-

Last week, Zach had fun with Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen but this week, he is serious and focused. He doesn’t move all over the stage but chooses to stay in place with his guitar, the right choice for a song like this. Zach totally gives this performance all he has. He is hitting the notes where he is supposed to.

Madi- Team Pharrell- Big Girl’s Don’t Cry by The Four Seasons-

I like Madi but at this point in the competition, this isn’t the performance that she needs to deliver. I do like the slight changes she made to the song. I am not feeling the accordion player with her, though, as it feels like a distraction to her vocals.

Emily- Team Blake- 9 to 5 by Dolly Parton-

Emily gives new meaning to the word sassy. Decked out in her cowgirl boots, she turns this song into a fun one. I think the song is a bit too old for her, but she looks confident up on the stage.

Amy- Team Adam- To Make You Feel My Love by Bob Dylan-

Amy sounds better tonight than she has in recent weeks. The arrangement is simple, quiet and heartfelt. I see Amy heading to the finale next week.

Jordan- Team Adam- Somebody to Love by Queen-

So, it’s Jordan against a large gospel choir tonight. I didn’t like it at first but once Jordan started singing, it was a WOW moment. He is hitting every note on target, even the high ones. Jordan should not worry about being eliminated tonight.

So, here we are at the results for The Voice Season 9! Deemed safe for having the top votes (and moving on to the finale) is Jordan from Team Adam, Emily from Team Blake and Barrett from Team Blake.

The bottom three who are eliminated, receiving the least votes are Amy from Team Adam, Shelby from Team Adam and Braiden from Team Gwen.

This means that the middle three (and those who have to sing to be saved) are Jeffrey from Team Gwen, Madi from Team Pharrell and Zach from Team Blake.

Zach- Team Blake- Live Like You Were Dying by Tim McGraw- I have one word for this performance…snoozefest. What in the world is Zach thinking? Okay, wake me up when the song is over.

Madi- Team Pharrell- Don’t Dream It’s Over by Crowded House- Good job by Madi. Not a great performance but a lot better than Zach’s.

Jeffrey- Team Gwen- Make It Rain by Ed Sheeran- This right here is the best of the three without a doubt.

After America votes, they choose to save Jeffrey from Team Gwen.

So let’s break this down!

  1. Would you believe that I have never watched an episode of The Voice?? I do love Gwen though so maybe I should check it out just for her. 🙂

  2. It’s getting close! I don’t really have a top favorite, but I want someone from Team Gwen to win. I just adore her.

  3. I have never watched this show and in all reality probably never will. I never enjoyed watching people pitted one against the other. I do know that a lot of people love this show-I’m just not one of them.

  4. I didn’t know Bob Dylan wrote the song ‘to make you feel my love.’Good luck to the contestants!
