Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is an upcoming science fiction, action and adventure movie set to hit theaters on July 17, 2017. The movie is based on the French science fiction comics series, Valerian and Laureline, by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mezieres. 1- The movie director for this film is Luc Besson, who has directed, written and produced movies for over three decades. As a director, he is most known for the 1997 sci-fi action movie-The Fifth Element and the 2014 sci-fi action movie- Lucy. As a screenwriter, he is best known for the 2002 action thriller movie-The Transporter and the 2008 action thriller movie- Taken. As a producer, he is most known for the 2006 western action comedy movie- Bandidas and the 2016 psychological, thriller, horror, drama movie- Shut In.

2- Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is the 2nd comic book movie role for both Dane DeHaan (Valerian) and Cara Delevingne (Laureline). DeHaan played the role of Harry Osborn/Green Goblin in the 2014 The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Delevingne played the role of June Moone/Enchantress in the 2016 Suicide Squad.

3- The movie’s 4 main cast members- Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen and Ethan Hawke are all award winners of some type.

  • Clive Owen (Commander Arun Filitt) won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for his role as Robert Parks in the 2001 Gosford Park. He also took home the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his role as Larry Gray in the 2004 Closer.
  • Ethan Hawke (Jolly the Pimp) won the 2007 Gotham Award for Best Ensemble Cast for his role as Hank Hanson in Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead. He also won the 2013 Hollywood Film Award for Screenwriter of the Year for writing Before Midnight, which he also starred in, playing the role of Jesse Wallace.

4- Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is the most expensive French movie made in history. The movie had a budget of 197 million Euros, which equals to about 222 million in U.S. dollars. Prior to this, the #1 one most expensive movie was the 2008 French fantasy adventure movie- Asterix at the Olympic Games, which had a budget of 78 million Euros, which equals to around 87 million in U.S. dollars.

5- Louis Leterrier makes a cameo appearance in this movie. He plays the role of Kortan Dahuk, an orange and blue colored alien species. Leterrier directed the 2002 action thriller movie- The Transporter, the 2005 movie- Transporter 2, the 2008 superhero movie- The Incredible Hulk and the 2010 fantasy adventure movie- Clash of the Titans.

6- Conversation between Commander Arun Filitt, Valerian and Laureline:

Arun- “This mission is a simple in and out. Agent Valerian, you’ll be running solo.”

Valerian- “I only work with my partner.”

Laureline- “Hi.”

Valerian- “We’re a team.”

Commander Arun Filitt is the Commander of Valerian and Laureline and played by actor Clive Owen. Valerian and Laureline are a team of Special Operatives, working with the Minister of Defense. Valerian is played by actor Dane DeHaan and Laureline is played by actress Cara Delevingne.

 

7- Conversation between General and Valerian:

General- “You’re running nearly 20 minutes late.”

Valerian- “Yeah, well time flies when you’re having fun.”
