The Shock Of Prince’s Death
The news of his death came as a shock from people all around the world. No one knew he was sick, although earlier in the month he canceled some of his shows due to having the flu and was also briefly hospitalized about a week later from what was described as flu-like symptoms. The Sheriff’s Office in Carver County received a 911 call at 9:43 on the morning of April 21, 2016. The caller stated that an ambulance was needed at the home of Prince at Paisley Park in Chanhassen, Minnesota. That caller has not yet been identified by name, but it was a male member of Prince’s staff. Prince was last seen alive at about 8:00 pm the night before. On the morning of April 21, members of his staff had tried to contact him by phone, with no response, prompting the 911 call. Prince was found by emergency responders in an elevator in his home, attempts were made to revive him but failed, and he was pronounced dead at 10:07 am at the age of 57.
After his death, there was an outpouring of reactions from those in the music industry. Lady Gaga posted on her Instagram account “Isn’t it amazing Prince shared his soul with us so deeply before his death? And now after, we will be replenished endlessly by both his legacy and all that he still has to give from the beyond.”
Mariah Carey posted on her Instagram account, “Genius, legend, inspiration, friend. The world will miss you. I’ll never get over it.”
Elton John posted on his Instagram account, “This is truly devastating news. The greatest performer I have ever seen. A true genius. Musically way ahead of any of us. Sang with him twice on stage. What an honor. Rest in peace you purple warrior.”
The messages keep pouring in, even today, three days after his death.
On April 22, 2016, a 4-hour long autopsy was performed on Prince by Dr. A. Quinn Strobl from the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office in Ramsey, Minnesota. After the autopsy had been completed, the medical examiner released his body to his family. A press conference was also held, after the autopsy, conducted by Carver County Sheriff Jim Olson. Not much was revealed during the new conference, except for the fact that the autopsy was done but that the results would not be revealed until the results of the toxicology testing come back, which could take weeks. Sheriff Olson also stated that he did not believe Prince’s death was a result of suicide or foul play.
Prince’s body was cremated, but his final resting place was not announced as of yet. A private memorial service was held on Saturday, April 23, 2016. It was not revealed where the service was held or who was in attendance, other than the fact it was attended by family, friends, and musicians.
