One Direction Helps Raise Awareness for Foster Care Month

One Direction proves their hearts are as big as their record sales by lending their song to FosterMore PSA to spread hope and awareness for foster kids.
All kids have dreams and all kids deserve to have their dreams supported. Join #FosterMore and help youth in foster care reach their full potential.

The guys of One Direction prove that their hearts are as big as their record sales by supporting Foster Care Month. They’ve graciously allowed FosterMore, an organization that is passionate about encouraging more loving families to foster, the use of theur song, “Story of My Life” for their new Public Service Annoucement (PSA).

One Direction Lends Voice to FosterMore PSA

One Direction Helps Raise Awareness for Foster Care Month

The One Direction song is a perfect fit into FosterMore’s message of shining a light on the amazing potential of kids and families in the foster care system, and how we can empower all foster kids to reach their dreams. The FosterMore organization means a lot to me because my best friend in high school was a foster child. Unfortunately, because of flaws in our local system, her education suffered and she lost the chance to walk in our graduation ceremony. If she had an organization like FosterMore rallying for her, graduation day would have been much different.

Ty Burell of Modern Family, who is an adoptive father, also lent his voice to the PSA. Take a look for yourself at this powerful message.

A little background on Mary Lee, the star of the “Story of My Life” PSA: Mary entered the foster care system at 12, but never really felt like she was part of a family. She loved school and learning, finding her solace in books. When she was 15, she started the process for adoption to find her “forever” home. However, she received negative feedback from people telling her that she should just “age out’ and use the money she’d get to go to college, rather than putting that burden on her family.

Mary didn’t want to choose between finding a family and pursuing her dreams of higher education. She was adopted just one week before her 18th birthday and still received a full ride to undergrad school. Now, she shares her story on Capitol Hill. She even has a bill nicknamed after her: the Mary Lee Bill. The bill states that any child adopted over the age of 13 does not have to include their parents’ income on their FAFSA forms (the forms you fill out to get your financial aid for college). Mary went on to law school and now works for Youth Villages, a national nonprofit organization.
