What a night at the Voice yesterday! Lots of news and emotion with this surprise marriage proposal. In case you missed the Voice week 3 yesterday, here is my recap!
The Voice Season 9- September 28th 2015: Recap
Week 3 starts off with Morgan Frazier, a 22 year old from Nashville. He sings I Want You to Want Me by Cheap Trick. Her parents spent $5,000 for her to record an indie CD at the age of 9. They took to the road to sell the CD, with sales totaling $30,000. She plays locally a couple nights a week but wants a wider audience. The first to turn is Gwen and then Blake. Blake made her giggle when he turned his chair. Blake compared her to Emmylou Harris while Gwen said she has been writing songs for a long time. She, obviously, chose Blake.
Amanda Ayala is a 17 year old from New York who sings Mississippi Queen by Mountain. She joined her first band when she was 12. Well, as lovely as that is, I don’t like her. She is stale, she is boring and she is way out of her league. I was surprised any of the judges turned their chairs but Adam did first, followed by Blake then Pharrell. Pharrell loves her tone, Adam said she improved as the song went on and Blake would love a rocker on his team. She goes with Adam.
Jeffrey Austin is a 22 year old from Chicago who sings Lay Me Down by Sam Smith. His father passed away from heart disease and he wishes his dad could see him perform. In high school, he loved theater but studied public relations in college. I wasn’t impressed with him at all and I thought for sure none of the judges would turn around. He was boring, stale and has no charisma at all. Gwen was the only one that turned, calling it a beautiful performance. My guess is that Jeffrey wanted Adam as his coach as he told Adam that the first concert he saw was Maroon 5.
Lyndsey Elm is a 22 year old from Vacaville, CA. She takes on the song Lips are Movin by Meghan Trainor. She works for the family pest control business, played basketball in high school but fell in love with playing the guitar. She did really well with this song, giving it a lively jazz feel. Gwen almost immediately turns around, followed by Pharrell, Adam then Blake. Gwen loves the whole package. While she expressed an interest in Pharrell, Lyndsey chooses Gwen.
Joe Maye is from Los Angeles and sings Word Up by Cameo. His first job was on a cruise ship, he wants to be an inspiration for his 6 year old nephew and he is part of a band. Here is another time I didn’t think anyone would turn their chairs around and this time I was right. No turns! Joe has a good voice but he has pitch problems and sounds very corny when he sings. Blake said he sounded out of breath, Pharrell didn’t think it was the right song for him and Gwen said he needs more practice to develop his stamina.
Manny Cabo is a 45 year old from Los Angeles who takes on Here I Go Again by Whitesnake. Manny is a fashion photographer for several major fashion magazines. However, his big dream is to be a rock singer. He has been performing since the 1980’s in cover bands. Manny has a wife and daughter. Manny has the voice of an 80’s rock singer but he sounds very dated. It doesn’t take long for Adam to turn, followed by Blake, then Pharrell and then Gwen. Pharrell is impressed with his dynamics, Gwen likes his control and Adam understands Manny since he started his career in a cover band. Manny chooses Adam.
Madi Davis is 16 years old, from McKinney, Texas and sings It’s Too Late by Carole King. When she was younger, she suffered from hearing loss but had surgery to remedy the problem. I like her voice. She has that indie-style to her. Pharrell turns first followed by Gwen. Gwen told Madi to ignore Pharrell’s cuteness while Pharrell remind Madi that he won last season. Madi choose Pharrell.
Caleb Lee Hutchinson is a 16 year old from Dallas, Georgia who takes on The Dance by Garth Brooks. He was the opening act for Bo Bice before. He kind of reminds me of country singer Scotty McCreery because of his deep voice. He does have a lot of pitch problems and he is not confident at all. None of the judges turned for him. Blake likes his voice and thinks he will improve over time and Gwen was shocked at how young he is.
Montage time– Riley Biederer ends up with Pharrell, Cassandra Robertson ends up with Adam while Daria Jazmin also ends up with Pharrell.
Chris Crump is 31 years old, from Baytown, Texas and sings Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran. He was homeschooled, played in a religious band and left his wedding reception, with his wife’s blessing, when he found out about Austin’s open audition. He sings very well and he is also extremely emotional as everyone sees when all four judges turn their chairs. Blake loves his warm tone as well as how he is able to be connected to the song he is singing. Gwen loves his intimate style. He chooses Blake.
Tyler Dickerson is a 21 year old from Hattiesburg, Michigan and sings Hard to Handle by Otis Redding. Tyler works in the family business and his first music manager was John Rich. He was part of Lyric Street Records but eventually dropped in the middle of a tour. He has a great country voice with a hint of blues. Blake is the only one who turns his chair.
Jubal and Amanda are a couple singing Seven Bridges Road by Steve Young. Amanda teaches music classes and Jubal is the son of outlaw rocker Steve Young, who wrote the song the duo is singing tonight. Jubal is also a single parent. They are a great duo with a 70’s country rock sound. Blake turns his chair first, followed by Gwen and then Blake. Gwen was impressed with their harmonies. Blake asked if they were married, where Amanda says some day they will be. On cue, Jubal gets down on one knee, with a ring and proposes to Amanda. She says yes and the couple chooses Pharrell.
