This is the last set of  blind auditions at The Voice Season 9 as the battle rounds start next week. After tonight, the Top 48 will be set. Each judge only has two spots left each on their teams.

THE VOICE SEASON 9- October 5th 2015: RECAP

  • Dustin Christensen sings Downtown Train by Tom Waits/Rod Stewart. Dustin is 35 years old and legally blind in his right eye. His hope is to be on Team Adam. He has a great rocker voice. Blake is the first to turn, followed by Adam, Gwen and Pharrell. I didn’t really see that coming. I mean yeah he is good but they only have two spots left and I am not sure he was THAT good. Gwen says she relates to him, Adam says there were things he could improve on, Pharrell says he sang with a lot of heart and Blake says he sounds like Neil Diamond. In the end, Dustin chooses Blake instead of Adam.
  • Bernadine Joseph takes on Hey Mama. Bernadine grew up in Haiti and moved to the U.S. when she was nine. She was bullied a great deal. Unfortunately, none of the judges turn their chairs for her. I can honestly see why. Some parts were flat for her and she has some tuning issues. I think with a vocal coach, she will do well in the future but now is just not her time.
  • Dustin Monk sings Bright Lights by Gary Clark Jr. Dustin is from Florida and has been singing since the age of 7. He works as a barber. He has a bit of a rocker sound, making Adam turn first, followed by Blake. Dustin goes with Team Adam, as I knew he would.
  • Chase Kerby takes on The Scientist by Coldplay. Chase hails from Oklahoma City and works in a candy shop. He was previously in a band that went on tour opening for the All American Rejects. I really like Chase’s voice and this song was a good fit for him. He doesn’t seem to have a great deal of stage presence though. Gwen turns her chair first and is the only one who turns. Chase is with Team Gwen.
  • Dawson Daugherty sings Problem by Ariana Grande. Dawson is a boy who loves to surf and was even in the state championship competitions for surfing at his school. I honestly had no idea surfing was even a team thing at any school. He so reminds me of Justin Bieber with his voice, which may be why no one turned. Gwen hated the song choice, Adam said he was inexperienced and Blake didn’t feel he was in control of the song.
  • Shelby Brown takes on Stars by Grace and the Nocturnals. Shelby is 16 years old, sings at a bowling alley and was the winner of a karaoke contest. Her hope is to be on Team Blake by making this song more of a country song. She definitely has a great deal of talent. The judges seem to hear her talent as well since they all turned their chairs at about the same time. She has talent, no doubt about that but I am not sure why she just didn’t pick a country song to sing. So, not only did the judges all turn their chairs but they also gave Shelby a standing ovation. Adam wants to give Shelby the final spot on his team, Gwen says she sounds rather experienced for 16 years old and Blake gets excited when she says her dream is to be a county singer. However, in a shocking move, she chooses Team Adam. Interesting I guess. Well, now Team Adam is full.
  • Amy Vachal sings Dream a Little Dream of Me. Amy’s dad was part of a Grateful Dead cover band. She enjoys painting, she plays guitar and sings at open mics. I really like her tone and if you ask me, she is the best so far tonight. Blake, Pharrell and Gwen all turn their chairs and they give her a standing ovation. Definitely deserved! Adam said he would have definitely turned around for her. Gwen compares her to an angel and Blake calls her a superstar. She chooses Team Pharrell, not surprising.
  • Blaine Mitchell takes on Drops of Jupiter by Train. Blaine like alternative rock music but country is in his heart. Not sure why he is doing this song, however, since it is neither alternative rock nor country. His dream was to play baseball for the major leagues but he had a knee injury. He makes money by singing country songs at a local bar. His voice is decent but not spectacular and he really has no stage presence at all. Blake and Gwen both turn around. My guess is that he will choose Blake since he is a country singer and he does. Team Blake is now full.
  • Summer Schappell sings Strawberry Wine by Deanna Carter. Summer was raised by her grandparents because her mother was an addict. She has been the opening act for Josh Turner, Leann Rimes and Little Big Town. Wow, that is quite a resume she has already in her career. She really has a beautiful country voice. I wonder if Blake is wishing that his team wasn’t full right about now. Summer has a great deal of stage presence, which isn’t something we have seen a lot of tonight. Gwen and Pharrell both turned around, although surprisingly it took a while. She chooses Team Gwen! Wow, Gwen has a country artist on her team which is interesting. Team Gwen is now full.
  • Caroline Burns takes on A Thousand Years. Caroline is very short but has a solid resume so far in her career. She is in a band and has performed the national anthem at a NASCAR race. Pharrell is the only one who can turn and he doesn’t turn for her. That is too bad because she does have a great voice. However, Pharrell says he didn’t turn because he already has someone on his team with a voice similar to hers.
  • Sydney Rhame sings Photography by Ed Sheeran. Sydney’s dad is a roadie and she herself teaches kids to play guitar. She has a really gorgeous voice and I am surprised that Pharrell waited so long to turn but eventually he does. Team Pharrell is now full.

The The Voice Season 9 battle rounds start next week. In the preview, it shows John Fogerty working with Team Adam, Brad Paisley working with Team Blake, Selina Gomez working with Team Gwen and Missy Elliot working with Team Pharrell.
