My son is almost nine years old, and getting a bit old for Hot Wheels race cars – at least that is what I thought. I gave him several packs of their Hot Wheels Workshop Track Builder series, which can be connected together to make extensive and varied track designs. The more track kits you have the more complex your designs can be, obviously, but we started with four kits to see what we could come up with.
Hot Wheels Track Builder Review
The 3-speed Launcher gave us the ability to launch our cars, which is pretty important to the entire endeavour, and something called the Kicker Launcher also came in that set. The Kicker Launcher is position a couple of track lengths from the 3-speed Launcher and it adds a boost to the cars speed. This came in handy to get enough speed to pass through the Quick Kick Loop, which also has a little power boost to get the car to keep moving. They even sell a kit that measures the speed of a passing car, which attaches easily to the regular track, though this requires a battery, which is not included.
My son had some difficulty figuring out how to set up the track, but that was more about his impatience with instructions and less about the clarity of the instructions themselves. Once I got involved we were able to quickly get a basic set up, which my son then ran with, adjusting where the special pieces would be placed to get; a) the best speed, b) the farthest distance, and c) the greatest impact (in the PVP runs, which seem to involve cars colliding).
The diversity of the pieces involved allows a child to tap into their creativity, which is something that I appreciate in a toy. Most of the parents that I know have at least a few toy cars for their children, and some have a large collection. Track kits such as these allow parents to extend the scope of those toy cars, and thus the life of them. I think Mattel has done a good job with these products. They are durable, easy to use, and can be combined to make a myriad of designs, so they don’t get boring quickly.
