What child doesn’t like crawling into a homemade fort or a play tent? There’s something incredibly fun and exciting about hiding out, or just enjoying your own little nook.

The VW Camper Van Play Tent for kids by The Monster Factory adds a nostalgic touch to your typical kids play tent. Licensed by Volkswagen, this tent is a mini replica of the 1965 Split Screen VW camper. The Monster Factory is a design company that specializes in high quality home and outdoor products. The VW Camper Van Play Tent won them the Gift of the Year Award in 2012.

The Monster Factory really paid attention to detail on this hip little play tent for kids. It comes collapsed in its own carrying case shaped like a VW wheel. The tent pops open on its own with little effort and all I needed to do to complete set up was insert 4 small rods to reinforce the frame. My kids were eager to crawl in so we decided to give the tent a try outdoors. I was pleased will how well the fabric of the tent held up with little hands and bodies pushing and pulling on the sides as they dove in and out. Despite the morning dew in the grass, the waterproof floor remained dry.

The complete dimensions of the VW Camper Van Play Tent when it is assembled are 54 cm wide by 165 cm long and 77 cm tall. The Monster Factory notes that the tent can accommodate up to 3 children comfortably. My 5 year old, 3 year old, and one of their friends fit into it just fine. There were definitely lots of giggles involved and they got a kick out of opening the front window screen to see out while they played inside. There are also two areas of entry on the tent. One door on the side, and one in the back, each allowing plenty of room for little ones to slip in and out.

When it came time to pack the tent away I ran into a little difficulty getting it to collapse correctly. The frame inside the tent reminded me a lot of a collapsible clothing hamper I had back in college. I understand how it’s supposed to pretty much fold into its self, I just cant always get it to do that very easily. Fortunately, The Monster Factory has posted several videos online instructing owners on how to fold the tent. I still don’t get it right every time, but as long as I can get it to fit into the carrying case I don’t really mind. My kids really enjoy this retro tent indoors and out and it’s still a breeze to assemble.
