This adorable little bird craft for kids definitely takes a little more time, but it is still very easy to complete, which makes it a great craft for all ages. You can paint them any color that you like, but the pink turned out very well. We’ve even left the legs off and glued clothespins underneath so that we can display them around the house. They’re perfect for summer decorating!
How to make this cute bird craft for kids
Supplies (affiliate links included):
- 2 styrofoam balls in different sizes
- 2 pink feathers
- Pink paint
- Black pipe cleaner
- Yellow play dough or sculpting clay
- Yellow card stock
- Glue
- Paint brush
Directions:
1. Paint the Styrofoam balls with the pink paint. Let the paint dry thoroughly and apply a second coat. When the second coat is fully dry, check for light spots and touch up.
2. Cut off (2) 1” pieces of the pipe cleaner.
3. Fold the pipe cleaners in half and poke the pipe cleaner pieces into the smaller ball to create eyes. Twist the ends to round out the eyes. Check for any sharp edges.
4. Cut a ¼” square from the yellow card stock.
5. Poke the square into the smaller Styrofoam ball at an angle to create a beak.
6. Glue the small Styrofoam ball to the top of the large one to form the head and body.
7. Poke one of the pink feathers into each side of the body, just below the head. Twist so that they are curved upward.
8. Cut (2) 3” lengths from the black pipe cleaner. Poke into the bottom of the body to create legs.
9. Use the play dough or sculpting clay to sculpt feet onto the bottom of the pipe cleaners. Let dry.
*If you are working with younger children, it might be easier if you cut the pieces and paint the Styrofoam ahead of time.
