See, Trainspotting was classified as a “black comedy drama,” which meant that parts of it were supposed to be funny…and if we’re being totally honest with ourselves, it succeeded there. The thing about a dark comedy, it’s not really “funny” ha ha”  but a “this is warping my brain so much, I can’t help but laugh or I’ll go crazy” ha ha. I can only imagine what sequel has in store for us!

T2 Trainspotting Movie Trivia

T2 Trainspotting is an upcoming movie that features comedy, crime, and drama. It is set to be released in theaters on February 10 (according to the latest information, although some sources still have it listed as March 3rd or 17th, so as soon as we have a hard release date, we’ll let you know). The movie centers on Mark Renton (McGregor), who returns to Scotland 20 years after the end of the first movie, to make amends with Daniel (Ewen Bremner), and Simon (aka Sick Boy, played by Miller), while trying to avoid Francis (Robert Carlyle).

Trainspotting was based on Irvine Welsh’s novel of the same name. T2 is based loosely on his sequel, Porno.

All the members of the 1996 movie are reuniting for this film including Ewan McGregor as Mark Renton (Rent Boy), Ewen Bremner as Daniel Murphy (Spud), Johnny Lee Miller as Simon Williamson (Sick Boy), Robert Carlyle as Francis Begbie (Franco), Kelly Macdonald as Diane Coulston, James Cosmo as Mr. Renton, Shirley Henderson as Gail Houston and Irvine Welsh as Mikey Forrester.

The only original film member not returning for the sequel is Kevin McKidd, who played the role of Tommy MacKenzie. Tommy died in the first movie from HIV-related toxoplasmosis.

Ewan McGregor, who plays the role of Mark Renton (Rent Boy) and Danny Boyle, the movie’s director, have also worked together in the past. In 1994, McGregor played the role of Alex Law in the movie Shallow Grave, with Boyle directing the movie. In 1997, McGregor played the role of Robert Lewis in the movie A Life Less Ordinary, with Boyle directing the movie.

Danny Boyle, who directed both Trainspotting in 1996 and the upcoming T2 Trainspotting has directed several other films including the 2002 28 Days Later, the 2008 Slumdog Millionaire, the 2010 127 Hours and the 2015 Steve Jobs.

While Mark Renton (Rent Boy) seems to have turned his life around in the 20 years since the first film, some of the other characters haven’t changed much at all. In fact, Daniel Murphy (Spud) is still addicted to heroin, Simon Williamson (Sick Boy) now goes by the name Simon and Francis Begbie (Franco) is still as psychotic as ever.

The budget for the 1996 film was 1,500,000 euros ($1,605,300), while this time around the budget was 16,819,302 euros ($18,000,000). A much larger budget this time compared to the first movie.

The soundtracks from the two movies are totally different. I mean, after all, it is 20 years later and music has definitely changed. The first movie soundtrack contained songs like Deep Blue Day by Brian Eno, Trainspotting by Primal Scream and Perfect Day by Lou Reed. The 2017 movie soundtrack features songs such as Shotgun Mouthwash by High Contrast, Slow Sippy by Underworld and Rain or Shine by Young Fathers.
